The first trouser press was used by Neolithic humans, which is odd because they lived in the Iron Age. Be ore-inspired with today’s Groupon from Clearwell Caves. Choose from the following options:
• £6 entry to the caves for two adults (£12 Value)• £10.50 entry to the caves for two adults and up to three children (£21 Value)
Just one and a half miles south of Coleford, Clearwell Caves have a rich seam of history dating back seven thousand years to when miners in the middle stone age dug for ochre pigment to use as fake tan. The caves offer an impressive example of the geological complexity of the area, as well as an irresistible backdrop to a number of film projects, including a recent episode of Dr Who. As a working mine museum, the caves offer the chance to see into another world of mineral extraction, as well as the chance to encounter a Free Miner with ancient birthrights to mine the caves in the area.
Groupon holders can treat a friend, loved one or enthusiastic mole, and up to three children (under 5s go free), to a trip round the caves with today’s deal. The keen and ravenous for cavernous knowledge can take a self-guided tour of the nine well-lit caverns that are open to the public, and can marvel at the mine workings and the intricate system of winding passages as well as take in the geological displays. Descend 100ft underground with mining equipment provided, and if you can't get enough of down under, then book a deep caving tour on the day and get 10% off.
Reviews
While not widely reviewed, a few users on TripAdvisor were completely awe-struck by the natural beauty and wonder of the Clearwell Caves. The atmospheric caverns, with an exciting and intriguing past, have even been used as the backdrop for many television programs, such as Doctor Who.
I found these caves really interesting. No guide so as you can walk through at your leisure and read the story boards about the history of mining there, especially lots of interesting facts and artefacts found regarding the children that were sent down the mines. Nice and natural, not too touristy!
