Keepers of compass secrets, the team of yacht masters and powerboat paladins at Portishead marina are qualified to qualify landlubbers from level 1 RYA up to Advanced Instructor level. Whether a fledgling first-time afloater or a hoary helm hugger the range of courses taught at Compass Sea School have sails filled by full force-of-the-law winds, as they are the designated school to which Avon and Somerset Police send their waterborne outfits.
Learners will convene at 9.30am for Level 1 RYA training with an accredited instructor. Over the course of seven hours, groups will be taken through content such as launching and recovery, starting and stopping, and steering controls. Once comfortable with the ways of the water, students will be shown more in-depth theory including rope work and IRPCS to compound aquatic knowledge. On course completion, successful buccaneers will receive certification entitling them to drive a powerboat under level 1 regulations, as well as receiving 20% off the Level 2 course to propel learning to the next level.
