Resplendent on Bristol’s historic cobbled streets, Byzantium offers up its treasure chest of Mediterranean delights from a converted 19th century brick warehouse, proudly housing grand marble staircases and opulent décor. The carefully crafted European food employs a feast of fine local and regional produce, selected according to the Earth’s eternal revolution around the sun and is served up with views of St. Mary Redcliffe church. Banishing bland dining experiences, these gourmands command a cacophony of entertainment within their exotic restaurant, including belly dances, magicians, and circus skills specialists to enrapture diners ‘til the early hour.

Skipping down to Portwell Lane, pairs of rumbling bellies can settle in for an evening of fine food and decadent drinks. Smoked salmon with watercress and a beetroot coulis (£6.00) jostles for top spot on a starters menu that also features chicken rillettes with gherkins and a thyme and honey vinaigrette (£6.00), as well as wild mushroom tart with celery purée (£5.00). Diners can then leap into mains such as pan fried rump of lamb with honey roasted parsnip purée (£17.95), poached fillet of salmon with caponata, pesto, and a balsamic sauce (£15.95), and chargrilled sweet pepper, red onion, and sweet potato gateaux with cheddar and a warm gremolata (£14.95).
