A 16th century residence with a nine hole golf course, this stately abode welcomes weary heads with flagstone floors, inglenook fireplaces and cosy, traditional furnishings. The restaurant serves local produce where possible, filling plates with hunks of Welsh lamb, local pheasant, and decadent desserts. Rooms are individually designed and enjoy en-suite bathrooms, while some are brightened with the occasional exposed beam and skylight. Placed on the heels of the Brecon Beacons, the hotel is an ideal basecamp from which to explore the Welsh wild country.

After perhaps heading out for a round of golf and views of the Black Mountains, guests can retreat indoors for an evening meal, with options such as home-made soup of the day (£4.50) and pot roasted poussin served with rich chicken stock and root vegetables (£15.50).
