Synopsis
One of the Grimm brothers’ fabled fairy tales, Hansel and Gretel tells the story of a young brother and sister lured into a gingerbread house and threatened by a wicked witch. Engelbert Humperdinck’s 1892 opera vividly brings the enticing tale of greed, cunning, and deceit to life on the stage.
About The Production
Sung in English with a full orchestra, Humperdinck’s magical opera is as inspiring for passagio pros as it is for first-time falsetto fans. The show, divided into three acts, follows the children as they are sent into the forest to forage for strawberries, and takes in the adventures they encounter along the way. Directors Clive Timms and Martin Lloyd-Evans mix darkly humorous musical wit and wizardry with Humperdinck’s fairy tale folk songs, presenting a memorable and accessible production. Staged in Clonter Opera House, the pastoral tale finds a perfect setting in a converted country barn.
