Traversing the waters and waves that marry Harwich and Denmark, DFDS Seaways provides swift passage into a land of wistful beaches, proud architecture, and rich seafaring history. The harbour city of Esbjerg overlooks the jostling grey-blues of the North Sea, and contrasts its graceful surrounds with inviting cafes, warm eateries, and a colourful spread of boutiques. Hushed museums and galleries offer an unusual glimpse into Scandinavian art and culture, while the enormous white figures of the Men at Sea sculpture watch over the city like faceless sentries.

The Ship
Short hauling in grand style, the M.S. Dana Sirena houses a regal spread of eateries, shops, and entertainment options across its pristine expanse. The aromatic scents of buffet and à la carte cuisine adorn the ship’s restaurants, while further refreshment is supplied by a bar that’s aglow with cocktails and sparkling wines. Fresh sea air is in ample supply on the invigorating decks, while each cabin is snugly kitted out with en-suite facilities, towels, and bedding.

Groupon Recommends
Juxtaposed with the modern convenience of a ferry, the Old Lightship’s rustic interiors will provide a hands-on insight into Esbjerg’s maritime heritage. The Water Tower’s Gothic heights offer panoramic views of the city’s cobbled squares, with the tumbling ocean waving beyond. 150 retail outlets can be found along the 600 metre Kongensgade stretch, where some of Southwest Denmark’s finest shopping opportunities can be found. Alternatively, eco-interested travellers may seek to discover the beautiful landscapes of the island of Fano just off the Danish coast. Purchase a Scandlines ferry ticket once in Esbjerg and take the short crossing to the island for wildlife and culture.

Reviews

DFDS Seaways is rated an impressive 7.8/10 by AFerry users. While some guests found their cabins susceptible to noise, reviewers praise the attentive personnel, leisure facilities and entertainment.

The booking was straightforward; the ferry was punctual; the Commodore Class accommodation is very good; the food (buffet) presented a good selection for two hungry teenagers and myself; the staff on the ship were very friendly, helpful and professional; boarding and leaving the ship with a car was quite efficient. All in all, no complaints.
