Auld Reekie Tours presented by Groupon.co.uk
£3.25 instead of £9.50 for a choice between the famously grisly Ghost Torture Tour or exploring the dark vaults of the South Bridge in the Underground Tour with Auld Reekie Tours - Save 66%
Auld Reekie, the former Victorian moniker of Edinburgh, roughly translates as 'Old Smokie' or 'Old Smelly', kindly given to the city by locals. During the industrial revolution, when the Edinburgh air was thick with smog, the fermenting slums would leave their mark on the ever-darkening landscape. Now your favourite deal-weilding company - in conjunction with our friends at Auld Reekie - invites you on a journey through those same streets where you will get a feel for how life once was in old the old town.
Operating tours in the South Bridge vaults for the past 15 years, Auld Reekie Tours' guides - past and present - have a story or two to tell about their experiences and the curious goings-on in Edinburgh's underground. All tours begin at the historic Tron Kirk on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's city centre. From here, you choose your own destiny...
If you possess the strength of character to opt for the Ghost & Torture tour, be prepared to discover exactly what happened during the burning times and where the victims of the Great Plague are buried (a lot closer than you think, apparently). That is, of course, if you make it through unperturbed by the legendary poltergeist. On the other hand, you might decide to go for the 'safer option' and embark on the Underground Tour instead. Here, you will visit a modern witchcraft temple still used by a coven of witches today. You will also find out why their former temple is unsafe for them to practise there today. But don't let any of this scare you out of snapping up this frighteningly fantastic offer!
What people are saying...
"I'm an atheist, an absolute sceptic regarding the paranormal, and we went on the underground tour in the middle of a bright, sunny day... but I have to admit, it gave me the willies (two of our tour group actually bailed out fairly early on). It's not for the faint-of-heart (putting aside the great ghost stories on the tour, the opening look at historical torture implements is highly unsettling). But it's all in good fun. Our tour guide, Loren (who I believe may be the fastest-talking woman in Scotland), was knowledgeable, likeable, and an outstanding storyteller. We were concerned a walking tour would be too "tourist-y," but this was actually great fun, very informative, and more than a bit creepy. Definitely worthwhile."
