With a wide range of authentic dishes sloping down from the mountain-locked nation of Nepal, Gurkha Brigade offers a flavoursome tribute to the gastronomic heritage of the Land of the Himalaya. Located just off Leith Walk, this characterful, homely eatery is defined by the all-seeing eyes of the Swayambhunath Buddha.

Sample the fiery flavours of sandeko lamb barbequed with mixed herbs and spices (£3.50), or opt for the tareko mushrooms, coated with spiced lamb mince and bread crumbs, then deep-fried (£4.95 ). Seal the deal with the aromatic garlic khorsani chicken, barbequed in a blend of garlic, peppers, onions, tomato and coriander (£8.95). The sekuwa is a sizzling dish of lamb, marinated with herbs, spices and yoghurt (£12.45 ), while vegetarians can delight in the medium heat saag aloo with potato and spinach (£8.70). Whatever the choice, each meal comes with a side of boiled or pilau rice (up to £2.25).

Reviews

Qypers, TripAdvisors and Yelpersall award Gurkha Brigade a favourable 4/5 stars. While some guests found décor old fashioned, reviewers applaud the authentic and tasty meals, as well as the personable customer service.

From the chicken momos (order straightaway because they're made from scratch and take 20 mins) through the crisp poppadums to the various curries our party of 9 ordered, everything here was lovely. Service was fun and attentive, and it was excellent value for money. If you want food from the sub-continent which is authentic Nepali and different from your standard British Bengali Indian, try this restaurant. We have been going for years and it was lovely to visit last week and see that standards haven't fallen.
