An AA rosette proudly clings to the white-washed walls of The Black Bull Hotel, a charming pub and fine dining restaurant cradled in the heart of the Borders. Guests are greeted by a minimalist exterior framed by hanging baskets and offset by a bull's head sculpture adjacent to the front door. A wood panelled bar and Georgian dining room extend the character of this late eighteenth century establishment, where fine dining fare and a range of tap drinks entice locals and travellers alike.

Two courses from the à la carte menu can get off to a fragrant start with a fish cake with dressed leaves and ratatouille (£5.95), and cured salmon, sweet red pepper jam, and honey mustard (£6.25). Guests can then silence awakened appetites with options such as pan-fried chicken stuffed with goats' cheese, pepper, spiced lentil, and butter beans (£13.95), and king prawn linguine with ginger and chilli (£12.95).

Reviews

TripAdvisors award The Black Bull a decent 3.5/5 stars. While some encountered a wait for meals, reviewers are keen to compliment the flavoursome cuisine, welcoming personnel and value for money.

The staff were extremely friendly and did everything they could to make our stay pleasant ... We ate in the restaurant a couple of times and really enjoyed the food, the slow cooked beef casserole was exceptionally good. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely hotel in a beautiful part of the country.

All the staff looked after us well and every meal with delicious. Dinner was wonderful - we had all three courses and came back for more on the second night ...
