There's no place like home, which means there is nowhere else that you can simultaneously deal with laundry, groceries and socks that have minds and legs of its own. The scenery of the Outstanding Area of Natural Beauty this Grade II-listed coaching inn is nestled in was the inspiration of many a masterpiece by John Constable. The 16th century coaching inn has undergone a recent refurbishment; fusing elegant, contemporary décor among many of its original features and much of its character. Open fires, original brickwork and overhanging oak beams pervade throughout the rooms and the restaurant, the latter of which serves up a fresh and seasonal menu using locally sourced ingredients where possible.

Staying for a night in one of The Angel Inn's six boutique bedrooms, twosomes can experience all the comfort of modern life within an historic setting. Like the rest of the inn, the bedrooms are styled to reflect the building's history and some contain original oak beams ,while all include the mod cons of Wi-Fi, underfloor heating and large flat screen TV's. Dining in the restaurant, guests can choose three courses from the modern British fare on offer, and wash delicacies like scallops with chorizo and red pepper puree (£9.60), down with a bottle of prosecco. Breakfast is an equally extravagant affair, with options including the classic full English as well as eggs benedict and mixed summer fruit pancakes to send overnighters on their merrily quaint way.

Stoke by Nayland is a lovely village in a beautiful part of the countryside and we had a most enjoyable three days staying at the Angel. Nikki and Mark and their team are friendly and welcoming and the food that they produce is to die for! Would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone and hope to stay there again.

Could not fault the service, room, meals or friendlyness and attention of the staff at The Angel. Had some wonderful meals, expertly cooked and beautifully presented. The room was delightfully quirky but very comfortable and spotless. All the staff were very helpful and attentive, but discreet. Would recommend to anyone.
