Britain is home to some of history’s biggest subterranean secrets, from covert nuclear bunkers in Essex to air raid shelters in Stockport and Wombles in Wimbledon. Delve deep into another with today’s Groupons:
£2.25 instead of £5 for a guided tour of Exeter’s underground passages for one person
£6.75 instead of £15 for a guided tour of Exeter’s underground passages for a family of two adults and up to three children
Constructed in the 14th century to accommodate the pipes that brought fresh water from the natural springs beyond the city’s walls, Exeter’s Underground Passages have held visitors in fascinating grip, like a grandparent passing on stories of yesteryear to younger generations. Meanwhile, the passages, which are the only ones of their kind in the UK - have stories of their own: tales of wars and sieges, and plagues and pestilence etched into the rocky walls for the perusal of curious young people and nostalgic older visitors.
Adventurous Grouponians can feast on a slice of culture, washed down with some heritage and history and enjoy a guided adventure through these peculiar passageways. Before heading underground, take some time to explore the interpretation centre, featuring interactive displays such as a talking medieval man, a high-speed video ‘fly-through’ of the passages to whet your appetite and engrossing artefacts discovered during archaeological digs. After a ten minute film presentation, you can then strap on your hard hat and torch before descending into the depths of Exeter for a 25 minute tour. For an adventure with a twist, pop down during Easter and take part in a special egg hunt.
