The Castlecary House Hotel has main house and surrounding cottage accommodation, with a wide selection of bars to choose from. Camerons Restaurant keeps pinkies poised with the likes of Sunday lunches and high teas, while more informal dining can be had in the Poachers Lounge with home-cooked pub grub and alcove seating. The Snug section of Poachers cater for families with young children in cushiony seating, and over 100 real ales and malt whiskeys are the apple of the Castle Lounge’s eye.

Once the Roman Empire’s most northern frontier, its remains still stand around 250 yards from the hotel. For a marvel of the modern age, drive the 12 minutes east to Falkirk and take in the canal-side sites of The Falkirk Wheel, a rotating boat lift, and its visitors centre. Sporting fun can also be had on one of the many nearby greens.

The highlight was a relaxed evening meal in the friendly snug each evening. Delicious pub grub: best chips ever, and superb sticky toffee pudding! We liked the breakfast too.
