The Hotel
With Renaissance charm resonating from the broad sweep of an oak banister to the lake views through the stone balustrades, the Chateau des Vigiers conjures a pre-eminent sense of French country luxury. Surrounded by the rolling acres of a 27 hole golf course, the four star hotel has two restaurants, one a formal affair in the east wing, the other a more casual brasserie beneath the vaulted ceiling of the old wine-making building. The spa and treatment rooms offer spaces to indulge, while the heated outdoor pool is open until September to a casual splash. The recent addition of the Relais rooms brings a touch of modern design to the hotel's grounds, with large breezy spaces, walk-in showers, and garden views.
Groupon Recommends
The region is famous for its magical chateaux, so jump in the car and drive 30 minutes to Chateau de Montaigne for a peek into the history of Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne. Stroll through formal gardens and crunch across the gravel, then perhaps spot the tower in which he wrote before visiting the wine shop to taste a little something from the vineyard. For a more earthy experience, head to one of the Dordogne’s many caves to the east of the region; which offer a wealth of their natural beauty and bizzare rock formations are worth the journey.
