A few sandy steps from the beach, Latas Surf House hangs ten by the crashing waves of the Bay of Biscay, and the bright lights of Santander glimmering across the waters. The lodge sits snug in Somo, giving it easy access to one of the largest beaches in the region. Warmed by the gulf stream, sets are served up from the Atlantic waves in the Bay of Biscay, and sun-drenched days end with west-facing views on the sun sinking below the horizon.

The Surf House
A surf school and lodging in one, Latas Surf House provides a wetsuit full of instruction, chilling-out, and totally rad BBQs all in one. Lessons take place in groups of no more than six and hit the waters Monday to Friday, with a bit of theory included. The house itself is kited out with a kitchen and common room, with the ample garden blossoming with outdoorsy activities. An indo board and slackline are available for land-based practicing, while volleyball and indoor games set the entertainment standards high.

With lessons embracing the taste of the waves from 11am-1pm on five weekdays of the stay, surfers can continue to improve their technique at their own leisurely pace with equipment hire included for the rest each lesson day. Once back on dry land, don the flip-flops and saunter around Somo, exploring the beachfront bars and restaurants, while making time to pop into the backstreet ceramic workshops that put the town on the arty map. Head into Santander and visit the 20th century Magdalena Palace which sits majestically on the peninsula looking out across the bay, and stay behind in the city afterwards for a proper night out on the town.

Transport
Flights: Direct flights are available from London Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick and Cardiff to Santander airport. Flights are also available to Bilbao from Manchester and London.
Airport: Santander airport is around a 25-minute drive, or approximately 22km, from the lodge. Bilbao airport is further afield, at around 75-minute drive and is around 105km away. Transfers are available from both airports for a supplement.
Ferries: Portsmouth and Plymouth also provide direct routes to Santander by boat.
Car hire: Car hire is available from Santander airport.
Top Tip
Popping a plastic bag over your hands and feet makes for smooth-gliding when putting on your wetsuit, and afterwards it can handily be used for wet-kit storage on the way home.

Latas Surf House is yet to be widely reviewed, however a couple of TripAdvisors write about Latas Surf House in a favourable manner. Latas Surf House also actively rides the Twitter waves.
The location is perfect with great waves within walking distance and the amenities at the surf house are incredible. A great Rioja for under £1.50 and a fat slice of Spanish Omlette for under £2. Perfect for any young people wanting to surf, hang out and have a good time with like-minded individuals. I can't wait to go back next Summer!
