It was in the 5th Century that Saint Marnoch uncovered an area blessed with golden stretches of sand and rolling green hills. Still famous for its Velvet Strand, Portmarnock's beach is now paired with a world-renowned links golf course and a recent history tinted by the golden glow of whiskey. Boasting a rugged landscape unique to Ireland, a twilight stroll along the sandy peninsula reveals striking hillside tuffs and dramatic cloudscapes. This anciently-settled part of the Irish coast still harbours signs of long-gone civilisation, with old wells and medieval churches found a stone’s throw from the bustling modernity of villages and town centres. The seaside villages are brimming with restaurants often serving locally-sourced food, and are popular spots for leisure activities including wind and kite surfing on the glorious stretches of coast.

The Hotel
An edifice of light-reflecting elegance surveying the tumbling greens of the surrounding golf course, Portmarnock Hotel sits on the site of whiskey history. Partly made up of the 19th Century mansion of the Jameson whiskey family, some of the original house now forms the hotel’s bar of wood-panelled walls and plush seating. The theme of sophistication continues throughout, enhanced by twists of modern design and comfort, with a restaurant serving international cuisine, and a cocktail bar offering views of Dublin’s Bay and Ireland’s Eye. Encased in a luxurious Deluxe room, guests find the influences of the sea and sand threading their way through the décor and design, can gaze out of the window onto the golf course or courtyard and also enjoy complimentary internet access and a large ensuite bathroom. From sea-themed rooms to the real thing, the hotel provides direct access to the beach.

Groupon Recommends
Golf is a major draw to the area, with Portmarnock boasting a famous links course allowing you to tee-off amongst dunes while being gently buffeted by the sea breeze. Walks along the beach provide beautiful views and work up an appetite for dinner, with the walk from Portmarnock to the town of Malahide taking around an hour. Two miles west of Portmarnock you can touch 12th Century stonework and imagine the lives of medieval monks at St. Doulagh’s church, the oldest stone-roofed church still in use in Ireland, complete with stone pool house and octagonal baptistery.

Local Amenities
Portmarnock has various small shops and facilities, while Malahide just down the coast is well-known for its popular restaurants. The DART railway station in Portmarnock and regular bus services from the town make travelling around the Dublin Bay area a breeze. The hubbub of Dublin and all its big-city facilities including healthcare and police stations are found only nine miles away.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We booked a deluxe room and that's exactly what we got. It really was very luxurious with all the little things looked after extremely well. I would recomend a visit here. Food and service was faultless. Can't wait to go back.
Chris S, TripAdvisor, Sep 2011

This is a great golfing hotel and is only 25 - 30 minutes from Dublin by car. About 20 minutes to Dublin Airport. Right beside the beach so no complaints. Its a 4 star hotel and deserves it. The service is outstanding and the staff are very helpful, friendly and polite.
