Lounging in the fortified coastal city of Essaouira, the Dar L’Ouissa looks out over the region’s artsy atmosphere, ancient history, and evocative architecture. The city cultivates the laid-back atmosphere of a picturesque seaside destination, from the catch laid out on the fishing docks each morning to the inventive remedies on offer at the spice souk, and the medieval labyrinths of the medina to the windsurfers taking in the sea breeze of the Atlantic.

The Hotel
Renovated by the local craftsmen of Essaouira, Dar L’Oussia is a boutique riad hotel that, from its bright terrace, overlooks the ancient fishing port of the region. The establishment exudes traditional Moroccan elegance with lavish gold and sapphire-blue décor wrapped around a central courtyard of luscious green foliage and arching doorways. Upstairs, the bedrooms are decorated in Arabic linens, and adorned by the scent of fresh flowers every day. The restaurant, complete with fireplaces and reed ceilings, serves up classic European and Moroccan cuisine, while the roof terrace provides space for a picturesque breakfast.
Groupon Recommends
Get an overview of the labyrinthine Medina from the Skala de la Ville, the battered ramparts of the city used in the opening scenes of Orson Welles' Othello. The recently refurbished Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdullah Museum holds a small but valuable collection that includes musical instruments and some of the intricately hand-woven carpets of the region. The spice souk is a heady realm of spices and herbs for anything from treating baldness to seasoning a fish tagine. Head down to the port for lunch at one of the fish grills, then check out the cannons and a view of the city that adorns most of the local literature.

Reviews
Riad Dar L’oussia received 4.5/5 from TripAdvisors who praised the hotel’s staff and facilities, though special mentions went to the location, both for the views and as a base for exploring the area.
Great location on edge of medina and close to beach and port. Roof-top terrace is sensational setting for breakfast and during the day. Friendly service and overall pleasant experience.

The Riad is in an excellent spot because it is on the edge of the city and yet everything is within walking distance. Breakfast is served on the roof where there is a broad view on the whole town.
