The Hotel
Log fires, hammer beam roofs, and intricate plaster-work all add to the tapestry of this hotel’s period features, and on top of that, one of its rooms was once a medieval hall. The history of the building spans over 800 years, as stop-off in Cromwell’s battles and, more recently as featured in TV’s Poirot. Tradition continues with an authentic pub with a selection of ales and foodie delights, with more formal dining available in the restaurant. Alfresco tipples can take place under the sun in the garden area, which boasts impressive views of Dunster Castle.

Don’t just gaze out at the Castle; take a hike up the wooded hill at the back of the hotel and have a stroll around its fortifications. Now a National Trust property with regular events, the fortress was home to the Luttrell family who lived there for 600 turbulent years and boasts views of the Bristol Channel. Gander back to the village high street and explore the Yarn Market, present since 1590, before keeping things traditional with a ride on the West Somerset Steam Railway. Exmoor National Park also calls more active sightseers to attention with many a hiking, cycling or horse-riding routes during the day, and enchants star-gazers during the evening, as the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe.

Transport
Train: Taunton rail station is approximately 22 miles from the hotel, reachable in around about a 40 minute drive. Taunton has connections to Bristol, Plymouth and London Paddington.
Road: The hotel is reachable just off the A39, which connects to the M5 at either Junction 23 or 24 at Bridgewater.

Had a very nice few days here again. Ideal location with lots of good walking in the area. Food is very good and staff are [sic] very friendly. Room was roomy and very comfortable. They also do a very good cream tea much needed after a long walk. In summer they have a lovely garden to sit in with views of the castle .one of our favorite [sic] short break hotels and we will keep returning.
