The Hotel
Overlooking the watercolour-like splendour of the local crags, this cosy rooming house marries rustic style with traditional Highland hospitality. The Killin Hotel’s rich, woody furnishings belie its 17th century origin, and establish a homeliness which carries through to its elegant and discreet bedrooms. Authentic Scottish delicacies abound in the Riverside Bistro, where scenic views are complemented by a menu which makes use of fresh, local produce.
The Stay
Finding peace among the mahoganies and soft lighting of a standard room, guests can sit back to catch a little television or scrub up in the en suite. Each morning will begin with the pleasant aroma of fresh breakfast, before progressing into afternoons spent exploring the astonishing countryside, or making use of free Wi-Fi access in the guest lounge. Those who choose to sample the delights of a three course meal in the Riverside Bistro can accompany their hearty meal with the gift of a flavoursome bottle of wine.
Groupon Recommends
Visitors can explore the architectural oddity of Moirlanich Longhouse, an unassuming design that offers a rare example of a traditional cruck frame Scottish black house. A short amble to the village of Acharn will take travellers down the soothing Waterfall Walk, which winds past wild streams and brooks and bypasses the old hermitage on its journey out to the Loch. If not golfing, sporting sorts may like to try their hand at fishing for the abundant stock of roach, trout, and perch to be found in the local waters.
Transport
Flights: Low-cost flights available from London Gatwick, Cardiff, Belfast, Manchester, and Birmingham.
Airport: Glasgow airport is roughly 60 miles from the hotel.
Trains: Low-cost tickets are available from London Kings Cross, Cardiff Central, Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham New Street, and Edinburgh Waverley.
Rail Station: Perth Rail Station is roughly 45 miles from the hotel.
Top Tip
When walking the Loch’s perimeter, keep an eye out for the wood and wattle of a replica ancient lake house known as a crannog. Its old-fashioned wooden form can be seen jutting out of the water.
Reviews
A loch sized 86% of LateRooms users wish to stay at the Killin Hotel again, while it scored an encouraging 7.8/10 on Booking.com. Some found the secluded location not for them, but the scenic location, rustic charm, and helpful staff won over many guests.
The staff were exceptional, very friendly, efficient and happy to help. Our room was just perfect for our stay and the public rooms are so cosy and welcoming. The surrounding area is second to none no matter what time of year you visit.
– Heather, Booking.com, January 2012
An idyllic location, particularly if your room overlooks the river. The hotel is a typical small rural establishment, where the staff all seem to be on duty 24/7, but they were friendly and helpful from arrival to departure.
