The Hotel

Part of a functioning wine estate that boasts sweeping vineyards of grapes and a dramatically mountainous skyline, Manley Wine Lodge’s whitewashed buildings are spread out around green lawns. The lodge is close to the historic town of Tulbagh, in one of the Western Cape’s key winemaking regions, but is only an hour and a half from Cape Town. Besides lovingly producing well-received bottles of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinotage, the lodge caters for guests with homely facilities, including a lounge and dining room based in the thatched manor house.

The Stay

A short, picturesque wander from the manor house, hotel rooms are arranged around a shaded courtyard beside the swimming pool. Views of the vineyards and the mountains can be absorbed from the windows, and when curtains are drawn guests can curl up in front of the television. Rooms also feature en suites with bath and shower, as well as tea and coffee making facilities, and most also include a fireplace. Arrival is celebrated with a bottle of wine to share, and the wine experience continues with a tour of the estate’s wine cellars and a session of tasting and wine pairing during the stay.

Set in a nature-filled valley, the lodge is in an ideal location for saddling up and taking a hack from one of the nearby stables, or for exploring the peaks and troughs on foot or by mountain bike. The town of Tulbagh is well known for its Cape Dutch architecture, and the swirled white buildings on Church Street are some of the best examples, restored following an earthquake in the 1960s. Those seeking a break from sedate local activities such as cherry picking, bird watching, and wine tasting can take the trip into Cape Town. In the city you can explore the colourful buildings and sample spicy street food in the Bo-Kaap district, wander among the colourful plant life in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, or take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain.

With the Winterhoek mountains, lakes and vineyards surrounding the grand French Huguenot manor, it is indeed a refreshing sight. The delectable room is sizable, with the required amenities, plus a fireplace. Breakfast is satisfying and the service excellent.
