Elsewhere, modern Egyptian towns and cities bustle in stark contrast to the hieroglyphs and grandeur of old, and dazzle visitors with their fine dining and warm hospitality.

The Ship

Setting sail in luxurious style, the Swiss Inn Radamis II is kitted out with a veritable treasure trove of on-board comforts. The ship’s handsomely furnished interiors abound with drinking and dining options, while chefs plate up an international variety of delights at the elegant Orangerie Restaurant. Robust BBQ meats and refreshing beverages can be enjoyed on the spacious Sun Deck, alongside the beckoning waters of the swimming pool. Elsewhere, legs can be stretched with workouts at the King Tut fitness suite where treadmills, exercise bikes, and other nifty apparatus complement a selection of spa treatments. On the lower deck, the tranquillity of the ship’s library is broken only by the rustling of pages as guests take a moment in the shade to enjoy one of the many books on offer.

The Stay

Spanning roughly 20 square metres, an air conditioned cabin awaits guests as they open the door to admire panoramic windows, flat screen television, and handy Wi-Fi access. River-cruising travellers can look-forward to a daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner as the ship’s cooks conjure up on-board treats to suit the most discerning palates. A refined afternoon tea of sandwiches and dainties will also be available on most days.

The Cruise

Boarding on a Monday, the Radamiss II sails the 220km between Luxor and Aswan over seven nights, arriving back in Luxor the following Monday. Stepping out on the Tuesday, visitors can get back on dry land to explore the ancient temples of Karnak and Luxor, where the pharaonic statues and obelisks will astonish and inspire. A colourful welcome reception of on-deck cocktails will conclude the evening, before a visit on the third day to the stunning West Bank and the world-famous Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, where ornate tombs, sand-ravaged colossi, and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut stand in timeless majesty. After boarding once again, guests can pass the rest of the day with an afternoon tea and show in the evening, while the captain pushes onward to Edfu via Esna. The following day in Edfu will allow a further brush with the past as the cruise reaches the Temple of Horus, where visitors can examine proud stone likenesses of the falcon-headed god, before returning to the ship for a mid-evening belly dancing display while en route to Aswan. A day spent in this city may see travellers scale the skillfully engineered High Dam, uncover the island-top temple of Isis, or visit the half-hewn obelisk which juts out of the local quarry. A concluding day of leisure on the Saturday will provide the chance for adventure around Aswan’s palm-fringed bazaars, weathered monoliths, and boat-strewn quay, while most of Sunday is spent sailing back to Luxor with disembarkation after breakfast on the Monday.
