Surveying the perimeter between England and Wales, Mellington Hall Hotel is opportunely placed for a bewitching country break of two halves. The counties of Shropshire and Powys flank the borderline, indulging wayfarers with geologically disparate landscapes encompassing severe moorlands, tumbling valleys, and waves of gentle, green hills. Shropshire’s fiery industrial past and medieval relics will stoke the imaginations of visiting history-lovers, while in Powys ramblers can take in misty prospects of the Brecon Beacons’ otherworldly peaks.

We chose Mellington because we were intrigued by the Gothic building - we were not disappointed. It is a wonderful place, with friendly, helpful staff, set on a hill surrounded by woodland. The food was excellent - we ended up eating all our evening meals there.
