Nestled in the rugged and verdant embrace of rural Cumbria, the elegant Whitewater Hotel offers an oasis of calm and relaxation on the shores of England's great lakes. The Lake District is an area bathed in natural wonder, where mountains and rugged crags majestically rise above the clouds, casting their reflections in deep ripples across the magnificence of Windermere and Ullswater. As beautiful as it is wild, the area has attracted the pens of some of England's greatest writers including the emotive reflections of Coleridge, Southey, and Wordsworth.

The Hotel
A former mill nestled a mile south of Lake Windermere and Ulverston, the four star Whitewater Hotel and Leisure Club is the quintessential rural retreat and spa. Dwarfed by plunging granite slopes and boasting striking riverside views, guests at this stylish auberge not only enjoy aesthetic stimulation, but can spoil the body in the pool, Jacuzzi and steam room as well as through a number of spa treatments. Further indulgence will be found upstairs where individually styled en suite rooms come complete with satellite television and tea and coffee making facilities. Fine dining is also on offer, with the Riverside Restaurant serving a hearty and inspired fusion of British and international fare, while the Dolly Blue bar offers a tasty selection of pub grub. For those keen to get in on the culinary act, breakfast is served both days with a three course meal available on the first night. The restaurant's sample menu offers a sneak peek into the typical delights on offer.

Groupon Recommends
Pull on a pair of hiking books to take an extended trek around the edge England's biggest lake as Lake Windermere is but a mile up the road, or continue further by linking up with other fells and shores across the region. For those seeking a more leisurely approach to sightseeing, boat tours operate out of Windermere town and many offer on board commentary. Historical pursuits are also a plenty, with the stone circles of Castlerigg, Long Meg and Kinniside bearing a striking reminder to the beliefs and culture of prehistoric society. The area is also covered in ancient ruins, with the castles of Kendal and Penrith a must for medieval enthusiasts. The town of Grasmere brings things into the realm of the artistic and reflective, as it hosts the quaint and charming Dove Cottage where William Wordsworth penned some of his most famous pieces.

Transport
Trains: Regular services run from London Euston to Oxenholme where connections can be made to Windermere.
Groupon Top Tip
If hiring a boat on Lake Windermere, remember that a 10 knot speed limit applies.

Reviews
An impressive 85% of LateRooms users would rest their heads at The Whitewater Hotel again, while reviewers on TripAdvisor awarded the hotel a cosy 4/5 stars. Guests had much praise to give to The Whitewater Hotel, in particular for the elegant atmosphere and comfortable rooms.
The large bedroom was gorgeous, king size bed, immaculately clean and tidy everywhere, very elegant, definitely a five star standard, and the bathroom was luxurious. We took advantage of the spa area - Indian head massage, sauna and steam room and a swim in the pool. We decided to have an evening meal in the downstairs bar area (Dolly Blue Bar) which overlooks the river. The meal was served within 20 minutes and the food was excellent.

Great stay in a fantastic hotel. We were made very welcome at the Whitewater Hotel especially the children. The accommodation was sumptuous, the food delicious and the spa was, despite reservations, (ie the acceptance of my two boys) was very child friendly and relaxing. A truly pleasurable experience.
