About the event
‘Journey to the Past’ takes theatre-lovers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane, with star, Helen Blackman, performing a solo montage of songs from a medley of animated films such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Anastasia and An American Tail. After finding fame and winning praise from Andrew Lloyd Webber on the BBC programme, ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?’, Helen released her debut album, ‘The Sound of Rodgers & Hammerstein’ to wide critical claim. Life-long admirers and more recent converts to the old classics can enjoy a show that brings treasured tunes to life.

About the venue
Originating as a church in 1772, the cuboid redbrick edifice of the Square Chapel was an architectural rarity from the first, yet was abandoned to neglect despite its Grade II* status until, in 1988, it was rescued by a band of local drama aficionados. They initiated a transformation of the majectically woebegone structure into a thriving theatrical venue, host to around 30,000 people a year and a diverse range of performances from the new acts in acting to time-honoured classics, rip-roaring comedy to roof-raising musicians.

Key information
Production begins at 8pm
Located centrally opposite Halifax railway station, Square Chapel is right next door to the Piece Hall. The railway station is directly linked to Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford and Manchester railway stations for outside commute. Square Chapel is also a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Bus Station.

Reviews

Helena Blackman’s tour is praised by The Stage, while The Public Reviews rate her performance 3.5/5 stars. Blackman’s song style and selected musical numbers are complimented – both seem to conjure nostalgic feelings in the audience.

Distilling so much history into one evening is no easy task. Helena Blackman wisely concentrates on songs that have influenced her, which means that familiar numbers dominate, while some lesser-known surprises are also revealed.
Scott Matthewman, The Stage, Jan 2012

Helena certainly has a talent for comedy and character acting, but her voice soars and sparkles most when using her soprano range.
Lucy Thackray, The Public Reviews, Jan 2012
