Gently lit with Arabesque lamps and adorned with rugs and woven cushions, La Menara brings the charm and taste of a Moroccan bazaar to Fitzrovia. Inside, waiters pour from decorative teapots and serve platters of tagine and couscous, all to the tune of alluring Arabian music. Open for weekday lunches, and evenings from Monday to Saturday, the restaurant tempts guests with a hint of charcoal and saffron, and enchants party bookings with traditional belly dancers.
Ducking into the ornate interiors in parties numbering two, four, or half a dozen, guests can sip on a glass of house red or white wine (£3.75) each, while waiting for their feast to begin. The vegetarian meze will offer up ten dishes to share, encouraging diners to dip into their pitta and hummus, and then quickly swapping to a more unusual, traditional, dish, such as sambusak or broad beans in charmoula.
Meze dishes include:
Hummus and pitta (£3.75)
Carrots in herbs and garlic(£3.95)
Spicy potatoes with green or red peppers(£3.75)
Aubergine in a herby tomato sauce(£4.25)
Cream cheese in mint and cucumber(£3.95)
Sambusak (filo pastry with goats cheese)(£3.50)
Vine leaves stuff with rice and spices(£4.50)
Broad beans in charmoula sauce(£3.95)
La Menara received mouth-watering scores of 4/5 from Qype users and 3.5/5 courtesy of TripAdvisors. While some opinions have varied, diners generally complimented the atmosphere, service and the quality of the food.
Food was freshly prepared and there was plenty of it. House red was just lovely and well chosen. We were served by a man, possibly the owner, who was polite and professional.

What attracts me to the restaurant is the peaceful ambience, the gentle lighting from inside beautiful Arabic lamp shades, the diverse and delicious food suited for vegetarians and meat eaters, and essentially a type of cuisine that's not found on every West End high street.
