About the show
The muscular dancing queens and kings of the English National Ballet leap onto the stage to perform programmes inspired by the pioneering dance work of Ballets Russes, a troupe that collaborated with composers and artists to create sensational shows early in the 20th century. Performances spin off each evening, and during several matinee shows, in the sumptuous surroundings of the West End’s London Coliseum. From 22 to 27 March, excluding 26, the show will include the world premiere performances of a new version of the ground-breaking Firebird piece, and Nijinsky’s once-scandalous L’après-midi d’un faune. From 28 March to 1 April, pieces will include the neo-classical spectacle of Apollo, and the flamboyant concoction of Suite en Blanc. Dramatic make-up from leading make-up artists and costumes from top designers will contribute to the kaleidoscopic colour of the occasion.

Other features
The London Coliseum’s bars usually open an hour before performances begin, and serve a full range of drinks including Champagne and spirits, as well as coffee, sandwiches, and snacks. Pre-orders can be made for intervals, and for a truly decadent evening a restaurant table can be booked for pre-theatre supper, with the table remaining reserved during the interval.

Reviews

Beyond Ballets Russes has attracted some highly favourable reviews from notable publications.

It [Suite en Blanc] was made in 1943 for the Paris Opera Ballet and last danced by ENB in 1976, several cultural aeons ago when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister and the Triumph Stag was a new car. And yet as the curtain rose on the assembled cast, arranged in classically ordered poses and groupings, Suite en Blanc looked fresh and new. It was if all the static and clatter and white noise of contemporary performance was silenced and a softly spoke intelligence restored.
