With tankards and oak beams gleaming in the lamplight, this 16th century inn serves up a range of hearty meals and fireside ales, with its resident barn owl providing a final feather in its hosting cap. The pub is a hubbub of gastronomic indulgence with speciality sausages and brimming pies arriving with pints of Shepherd and Neame as well as cowslip and sloe fruit wines. Welcoming inside as well as out, the inn’s large garden and children’s menu make it a good location for family outings and games of hoopla involving traditional rocks.
Pairs of diners can pull out their shirts and tuck in to a main course such as six-hour slow roasted pork belly, served with mashed potato, vegetables, crackling and rich gravy, or lamb and apricot pie, in which diced lamb and apricots are slowly simmered in apricot wine. Puddings include banoffee pie and apple crumble, based around locally-sourced bramley apples stewed with cinnamon, and sugar.
