Choosing to employ alternative building materials, modern sandcastle-makers are often accused of going against the grain. Get swept away with today’s Groupon: £109 for a two night stay for two with breakfasts and a bottle of wine at The Otterburn Tower Hotel.

Surveying the hilly verdure of the Redesdale Valley, this castle retreat marries the grandeur of its 11th century design with modern conveniences amid 32 acres of Northumberland National Park greenery. The Otterburn Tower Hotel’s homely interiors pamper the eyes with original stained glass and warm oak panelling, while taste buds are treated to local ales and AA Rosette-awarded cuisine at the on-site country pub and restaurant. In contrast to its peaceful setting, the castle bears a rich history which has seen it fall under siege, and play host to such notable lodgers as the famed author and poet Sir Walter Scott.

Opening a bottle of wine on arrival, guesting pairs can begin a corking break as they settle into their individually decorated room, complete with en suite facilities and classically styled furnishings. Breakfast each morning will provide plenty of energy for exploring beyond the hotel walls, where lush grounds merge into rural landscapes that abound with golf courses, fishing rivers, and even quad biking circuits. Elsewhere, various National Trust properties beckon, while the meandering Northumberland coastline provides a clutch of tranquil beaches for sandy rambles or a spot of impromptu paddling.
Reviews
TripAdvisor users awarded The Otterburn Tower a dreamy 4/5 stars after a peaceful night’s sleep. Guests came for the stately grounds, but stayed for the spacious rooms, exceptional service, and delicious food.
Our welcome on arrival was by helpful smiling staff who pointed us to the 'Stables' bar while our rooms were readied - we were early. Everything was spot on. Our rooms were spacious, cosy and clean. The evening meal was outstandingly good and the service quite splendid. After a good night's sleep, breakfast was also very enjoyable with a wide selection and freshly prepared.

We have stayed at Otterburn Tower Hotel on several occasions over the years and have always been made very welcome. It is a traditional Country House Hotel, squeaky floorboards, large bedrooms and open fires. Food is good!
