A family-run establishment in the northern reaches of Northumberland, Purdy Lodge has a national park on one side and the blustery eastern coast of England on the other. Contemporary rooms offer welcome respite from long journeys through the rural wilderness, or a comfy base for exploratory rambling and hearty tucker. The on-site bar and grill offers freshly prepped and locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, alongside a 24 hour cafe that provides coffee and cake to passing motorists and midnight snackers alike.
Take the short drive to Seahouses to charter a boat out to the Farne Islands, where England's largest population of puffins flit and skim over white-tipped waves to their burrows on the cliffs. Drive north and find the Lindisfarne causeway at low tide, where a thin slip of road heads out to Holy Island and the site of an ancient monastery. The area is rich in wildlife, so keep an eye out for red-backed shrike, honey buzzards, and the white streaks of arctic terns as you wander across the mottled sands.
• Standard double room with en suite bathroom, flat screen TV, and free Wi-Fi
• Two course meal on the first night
• Bottle of house wine
• Full English breakfast each morning
