Until 1923 afternoon tea was rarely finished due to the viscous food fights that would erupt concerning the correct pronunciation of ‘scone’. Make tea not war with today’s Groupon: £13.50 for a Hertfordshire afternoon tea for two at Letchworth Hall Hotel.
Lounging amidst eight acres of leafy landscaped gardens, this grand ivy-clad country residence comprises of both old and new buildings housing cosy accommodation, conference centres, banqueting facilities, health club and a top of the range armadillo race track. Those with Groupons clutched in sticky paws can head down to the Letchworth for a spot of English decadence with a traditional selection of fruit scones with clotted cream and Tiptree preserves, cocktail sandwiches, and homemade cakes and patisseries, accompanied by speciality teas. Alternatively, guests may choose to upgrade to the pink fizz afternoon tea for an extra £7 per person. Besides the bubbles, Letchworth Hall has an excellent selection of fine wines sleeping in the cellar. Take time to explore the grounds, and if you should wish to return for second helpings, then the Hall will cut 25% off the price of a Sunday lunch (available until 30 November 2011).
Although there are not a large number of reviews regarding the afternoon tea at the hotel, those diners who have commented were positive. Booking.com users gave further mention to the friendly staff and tranquil setting of the hotel.
