Combining the three elements of café, restaurant, and lounge bar, Wine & Bread offers an Aladdin’s cave of table treasures from lovingly crafted classic Portuguese fare to a quiet dram amongst the Moorish drapes and cosy nooks-and-crannies seating. The à la carte menu portrays the region’s passion for hearty meats and the fruits of the sea, while the wine and whisky list casts its net a little wider, taking in vineyards and distilleries from around the globe. Established and run by husband and wife team, Marcia and Kadir, the doors are open six days a week to diners and casual coffee drinkers alike.

Guests are welcomed into a fusion of Portuguese and Turkish décor, creating an enticing atmosphere in which to enjoy a three course meal for two people with starter, main course, dessert, and classic glass of white port. The Iberian bites on offer include the fragrant Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato (clams steamed in white wine, coriander, and garlic), the piquant Piri-Piri chicken, and sweet treats such as the iconic Pastel de Nata custard tart.

Well worth travelling to. A simple and authentic eating place with excellent Portuguese food, a very good house wine, very good service, clean and tidy throughout and live music without being too obtrusive. We had a lovely and relaxed evening.
