Groupon Asks

Groupon learns more about the creation of Pure Land Meditation Centre and Japanese Garden, as well as its use as a contemplative space.

How was the garden established?
The process of creating the garden began in 1980 when two acres of flat fields started to be dug up and renovated, forming a miniature replica of Japan's hilly scenery. The garden was built up gradually, with many features added over the years with help from the local community.

What features are there?
A number of the large stones were placed individually, with the paths following the lay of the land. Over time more traditional Japanese elements were added, such as water, carp, bridges, bamboo, cherry trees and stone lanterns. There is, of course, still a mixture of English native plants too.

Any other points of interest?
There is a pagoda, as well as a Zen garden and a traditional Japanese tea house for tea ceremonies. The most recent addition, in May 2013, is the crystal garden; a space that uses crystals instead of grass or plants to dramatic effect.

What is the garden used for?
The garden forms a space for meditation and peaceful contemplation. It is also an ideal venue for the annual Nature's Heart concert, which showcases song, poetry and talks on spiritual awakening and enlightenment.
