While his brasserie Bistro One scoops the FoodPlymouth award for Best Restaurant 2011/12, sommelier Stephen Barrett keeps his finger on the pinot pulse as he sniffs, swills, and critiques tipples for the BBC and the Circle of Wine Writers. The bistro is seasoned with local produce where possible, hearty home cooking, and an extensive selection of exotic wines, all wafting from the Victorian conservation area of central Plymouth. Delighting diners with Mediterranean breakfast, lunch and supper dishes, the eatery also dips into Spanish cuisine and offers opportunities to taste-test wines, cheeses, and the odd British oyster.
A colourful two course Mediterranean feast will begin with a bowl of olives to share before guests peruse starters including leek and blue cheese tart and seasoned seafood soup. Mains include a roasted loin of pork infused with Iberian spices, apricot, and ginger, and spicy aubergine and vegetable bake with manchengo cheese. Hungry carnivores can opt to upgrade to a sirloin steak for an extra £3.50. Meals will be accompanied by a mini wine tasting session, as guests sample the colouring, aromas, and sensual flavours of two Mediterranean wines, all under the careful tutorage of Stephen Barrett himself.

Reviews
Aside from winning Best Restaurant at the 2011 Food Plymouth Awards, Bistro One was rated an appetising 4/5 by TripAdvisors and 7.7/10 by Toptable users. Diners enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and wine tasting opportunities, though special mentions went to the quality of the food itself.
Excellent meal. Very friendly. Convivial folk on adjacent tables. Fish starter was great and the beef mains just as good. Wines as suggested went down well.

Learnt more in half hour than in all my years of "quaffing" wine. Food was brilliant, the atmosphere brilliant, would recommend anyone to pay a visit, and I am sure you will not be disappointed by the experience.
