The Deal

A selection of olives (usually £3.50) and warm breads (£3.50) opens up a range of three-course possibilities. Starters include a chicken and gnocchi gratin (£5.95) and calamari served with a lemon mayonnaise (£6.25). For the main course, diners can choose between potted crab with salad and half a pint of prawns (£15.50), or a whole local lobster picked from the tank, which is then pan friend before being oven baked with cheese, Tabasco and breadcrumbs (£30). Alternatively, non-seafood dishes include a 16oz sirloin steak served with chips and green beans (£17.50). Sweet teeth can delight in a selection of desserts, such as a chocolate and pecan brownie (£6.50) or an amaretto panna cotta (£4.95).

Trio of olives (tomato and chili, garlic and parsley, rosemary and thyme) and bread selection (including walnut and date, pumpkin and cranberry, served with dipping oils)

Starters

Orata on Bruschetta - fillet of sea bass served on bruschetta

Pollo and gnocchi gratin - pan fried corn fed chicken with homemade gnocchi with mascarpone, Parmesan, pepper and nutmeg, breadcrumbs then cooked under the grill

Caprese - mozzarella salad with pesto, red onion, vine cherry tomatoes, rocket and basil

Calamari frittli - Squid lightly dusted in chili and flour then fried, served with lemon mayonnaise

Mains

Local cracked granchio - potted crab, crack the claws, served with mixed salad and half a pint of prawns

Aragosta - whole local lobster picked out of a tank, pan fried then oven baked with cheese, Tabasco and breadcrumbs, served with spinach and Italian potatoes

16oz Bistecca - sirloin steak served with chips, watercress, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms and fine green beans

The Merchant

J's Italian is the second offering from Scott Matthews, owner of Relentless Steak and Lobster in Southsea. The restaurant houses a pure glass pizza oven, a two meter live lobster and crab tank where guests can choose their dinner, while also offering deli foods and coffees. The menu hosts a range of seafood, steak and classic Italian dishes with an emphasis on fresh, local produce.
