Bringing a taste of Sparta to the Steel City, Parthenonas serves up a full Greek taverna eating experience alongside traditional Hellenic folk music. The licensed restaurant whips up a tasty selection of speciality mezes and classic dishes, while filling glasses with anise-flavoured ouzo. The chefs cook up a storm seven evenings a week, embellishing plates until 11pm.
Aegean eaters can choose a starter from a selection of hot and cold Orektika, including a dips meze consisting of tzatziki, melitzanosalata, hummus, and taramosalata, and a helping of pitta bread (£5.50); a Keftedakia of beef meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce with yoghurt, herbs, and rice (£4.50); or a Spanakopita of spinach leaves with onion, feta, and garlic in a filo pastry casing (£4). More Greek gastronomy will come from main courses including the veggie-friendly stuffed aubergine-based Papoutsaki (£8); a meaty Kleftiko leg of lamb cooked in red wine and served in filo pastry alongside an array of vegetables (£11.50); or pasta-based classic Pastitsio (£7.95). Post-chew, this will all be washed down with a throat-tingling shot of ouzo (£2.50), and a traditional Greek coffee (£1.50).

The food was excellent and the service was slightly on the slow side but the atmosphere was friendly, upbeat and welcoming. This is a restaurant I can recommend and will return to.
