Despite its evocative name, rounded hills and rolling downs characterise the district, pointed peaks only punctuating the landscape in the form of church spires stretching into the sky. As you tie up your hiking boots and set out amongst the autumn-tinged landscape, your eye is caught by scrubs of wildflower interrupting the golden-green of the slopes with surprising flashes of yellow or indigo. Sheep calmly cropping the grass pepper the hillsides, and if you keep a careful watch you may get a glimpse of the enigmatic red deer as it melts into the background.
Also rich in British history, the area is patchworked with grand houses and estates, from the faded glory of 18th Century Calke Abbey, to the ostentatious Elizabethan splendour of Hardwick Hall, and the neoclassical sculptures and stunning grounds of the Chatsworth Estate.

The Hotel
A stately brick building sitting sturdily a few steps from Derby railway station, the four star Hallmark Hotel has tasteful interior design, with deep shades of plum, olive and burgundy giving a fruity twist on modern styling. Each room has luxury cushions to make the bed plumply inviting, a flat screen TV with Freeview, Wi-Fi internet access, and an en suite bathroom. Large windows ensure the rooms are dappled with light, while in the Brasserie quality ingredients are sourced to produce succulent dishes. Breakfast is included, and offers a selection of cereals, fruits and pastries as well as a full English option, and free parking is available on-site.

Groupon Recommends
Two tickets to Chatsworth House are included in the stay, giving you a chance to absorb the beauty and history of the house, which stretches back to the 16th century. Situated 40 minutes away, the 105 acre garden includes waterworks, sculptures and a maze, while the house is packed with priceless art and furniture. If the majestic estate whets your appetite for British architecture and history, Calke Abbey is a drive out of Derby in the other direction, and is a fascinating National Trust property inscribed with eccentric family stories and featuring an orangery and a park.
A 35 minute drive from the hotel brings you to one of the Peak District’s biggest attractions, the Heights of Abraham, which offers fantastic views of the valley from a summit reached by alpine cable cars shuttling up the slope. You can also take a tour around the caverns, learning the stories of the miners who worked them, and seeing the intricate patterns of rock and mineral lit up by coloured lights.
Local Amenities
The hotel is very close to Derby railway station, with regular departures to many major British cities. A good choice of restaurants can be found nearby, and the large Westfield shopping centre is a 10 minute walk away, with an extensive range of retail and restaurant options alongside a 12-screen cinema. The Royal Derby Hospital to the west of the city centre has an emergency department.
Groupon Top Tip
There are a host of great cycle trails around the Peak District, so take your bike if you can, or consider hiring one when you get there.

Well located, clean hotel, with nice decor. Good to see an old hotel refurbished in such a way. We attended for a wedding and the food and service were excellent.

All the staff we came into contact with were attentive, polite and friendly without being intrusive. The bedrooms are a good size as are the spotlessly clean bathrooms which have nice fluffy white towels and a good selection of toiletries.
