Setting the tone for percussion instruction, Drum Africa’s experienced teachers hit the right notes with their African drum classes, designed to bring a taste of percussive tribal music to the West. Laurence Hill, the lead instructor, has spent time in Guinea, Ghana, Senegal, Mali and other African countries, learning djembe drum music directly from the areas’ tribes. Drum Africa members also regularly perform at jazz clubs and festivals in South East London and beyond.
Students are invited to enjoy two or four 75-minute group lessons in African drumming with Laurence and company at The 10 Centre, where they will learn to play the Djembe drum in a relaxed and friendly environment. Students will experience a new approach to learning music, as African music is taught aurally, which sparks a sense of rhythm, co-ordination, and creativity. Two tutors lead the sessions, which focus on Guinean and Ghanaian djembe music – which includes singing – and the tutors aim to tailor classes to individual members based on their interests and strengths. Drums are provided, and can be hired for practising for £3 per week.
