Bursting with 12th century character and traditional charm, Sir John Barleycorn welcomes couples, families, and wayward ponies from its perch at the edge of the New Forest. A fusion of familiar favourites and inventive creations echoes throughout its cuisine, ranging from cod and chips partial to a swift pint, to brazen filo tartlets of brie, pesto, and cherry tomatoes. Contrasting themes of old and new continue where thatched eaves meet contemporary slate tiles, interspersed with exposed brick and warm wooden beams.
Silencing tenacious tummy rumbles, couples or pairs of people can enjoy two courses of delectable cuisine with a glass of house red or white wine (£4.30). Starters include tiger prawns, pan fried and drizzled in lemon butter (£7.90); or sautéed chicken livers enlivened with smokey bacon, dry sherry, and pine nuts on toasted ciabatta (£6.95). Moving onto the main event, patrons can choose tender rosemary and thyme infused lamb shank (£14.95), falling off the bone and slow cooked with shallots and red wine, and a side of creamy mash and vegetables; or wild mushroom risotto (£9.95) served with asparagus and warmed parmesan shavings.
