Synopsis
Tom Stoppard’s multi-award winning play The Real Thing was first performed in 1982. The protagonist, Henry, is a famous playwright, whose new play, stars his wife Charlotte, and deals with issues of love and fidelity. Realities and fictions rapidly become entwined with other members of the cast, with Stoppard using the play within the play to pose questions about the nature of honesty looks at the nature of love and honesty, and the relationship between reality and fiction.
About The Event
This 30th anniversary revival production of Stoppard’s Tony award-winning play comes from the versatile stable of the English Touring Theatre, who are known for their range of dramatic works, which range from Shakespeare’s Hamlet to modern pieces such as Mustapha Matura’s Rum and Coca-Cola. Director Kate Saxon takes The Real Thing to the Everyman Theatre, as part of a tour celebrating its successful first stint 30 years ago, for which the play scooped the 1984 Tony Award, before achieving Broadway-conquering success across the pond.
The Venue
Entering the restored 650-plus-seat Everyman Theatre in the heart of Cheltenham, acting aficionados will witness the architectural magnificence of Frank Matcham’s 1891 design. The production will run from 5-9 June, and the curtain will lift on the play-within-a-play at 7.45pm. There are wheelchair spaces in Stalls, with level access and automatic doors onto Regent Street, as well as accessibility lifts to all floors. Bar refreshments and sweet fancies will appease peckish beings, ensuring focus remains on stage, not stomach, proceedings.
