Soldering glass requires a steady hand, a hot iron, and the ability to stand upright and to attention. See it half full with today’s Groupon: £20 for three hour glass fusing or stained glass making workshop at Exemplar Glass.
This glassy establishment is home to pieces of contemporary glass work designed by well-travelled sculptor and artist Jane Ballard. In her endeavours to create unique, bespoke items, all of her designs, fashioned from brightly coloured glass, are hand crafted into eye catching pieces. With a crystal clear view for all things glass, she has dedicated skills in glass fusing and casting using strip work, aperture pours and drop moulding.
Arts and crafts fanatics will get a thorough demonstration with Kerry Williams on stained glass; or fused glass making with Jane Ballard. Kerry will demonstrate the ins and outs of the process such as how to cut, shape, grind, and polish the glass and demonstrate processes such as soldering used in the Tiffany method of making a stained glass panel. Jane will demonstrate skills including cutting curves and how to add confetti, powder, frit, and metal inclusions to creations for sparkly decoration. Refreshments are provided throughout the course for energy boosts. Artistes who wish to have something to show for their newfound knowledge can get hands on experience by purchasing materials for £15 for the stained glass course, which they can magically conjure into a finished product to take home with them, and £17 for the fused glass course to make into a set of coasters for example. Fusing work will be fired for 24 hours before being available for collection or delivery by post for an additional cost.
