Sometimes it’s nice to go off piste, shunning the inevitable DVD, aftershave or pair of socks in favour of something a little more extravagant.

Spa Treatment at The Lowry Spa

The Lowry Spa offers luxury gift vouchers, with a variety of treatments and packages available to purchase for a loved one. The Men’s Booster package offers the best of both worlds, with express treatments keeping costs down whilst still providing the sumptuous spa experience. This will last two hours, incorporating a back, neck and shoulder massage, a facial, a manicure and a pedicure, leaving the man in your life preened and pampered from head to toe. If you’re feeling particularly giving, upgrade to the three-hour Executive Stress package for men, which includes aromatherapy massage using essential oils, along with a two course lunch in the stunning River Bar and Grill, followed by a relaxing facial.

Shirt Making & Gentlemen’s Tailoring Class with School of Junk

Junk Shop is the Northern Quarter’s sustainable clothing store, specialising in unique handmade pieces and one-off vintage pieces. However, they also run various classes to help train others in the art of homemade fashion and upcycling – and importantly these classes aren’t just for girls. Whilst the dressmaking workshops may not pique the interest of many men, School of Junk also runs a shirt making and gentleman’s tailoring course, throughout which participants will learn how to make a men’s short-sleeved shirt, tailored to fit with a choice of vintage fabrics and prints, as well as broader skills such as how to pattern cut, how to use a sewing machine, how to make alterations and how to add details like buttons and collaring. The workshop can be taken as a full weekend course or spread across one evening a week for month, and either option will cost £120.

Private White V.C. Coat

Private White V.C. is a high-end clothing company tucked away within the streets of Salford, flying the flag for modern-day northern industry. Named after WWI hero Private Jack White, the collection is designed by Nick Ashley – the company’s creative director and son of iconic fashion and interiors designer Laura Ashely – who sought inspiration from Jack’s everyday wardrobe, which incorporated classic military wear alongside outfits for his motorcycling and car racing hobbies. The brand has become especially respected for its line of sturdy, functional and fashionable outerwear, so check out the Deck Parka made from 100% waxed cotton supplied by nearby neighbours The British Millerain Company. At £395, it doesn’t come cheap, but certainly fulfils the brief as a luxurious gift. Not quite got that cash to splash? Go for a paisley cotton silk pocket square, which is made in the Manchester factory using classic Liberty design fabric. UK delivery is free, and there’s also 15% off selected items when you quote the code ‘XMAS15’.
