From Our Editors

First opened in Soho in 1926, Patisserie Valerie follows artisanal baking traditions brought to London by Belgian-born Madam Valerie, whose mission was to introduce continental patisserie to the English. Now boasting over 120 venues nationwide, the company adorns its cafes with a 1950s-inspired decor and serves up an array of freshly made cakes, craft pastries, breakfasts, lunches, coffees and loose-leaf teas. Their specialities include meticulously crafted croissants and viennoiseries, as well as homemade Italian-style gelato.

Soho branch- 5* Wonderful service, waiters couldn’t do enough to please us and other customers. Variety of sandwiches, beautifully presented, cakes and scones, butters and jam - range of drinks offered. Victoria branch - 3* service ok. Had to wait 40 mins for afternoon tea, thoroughally enjoyed a range of hot drinks, tea, coffee, hot choc! The sandwiches were disappointing, 4 egg, 2 cucumber, 2 ham, 2salmon - all on white bread, very dried up along edges. Have been to other branches and there was more of a variety. No jams served with scones, had to ask. It wasn’t busy!

The afternoon tea was OK. The sandwiches were only about as big as my index finger and while the fillings were delicious, the bread was stale as if they'd been made in the morning and left out all day. The single portion of cream for the scones was skimpy (and was meant to be shared by two people) and that too had been out for some while as it was so soft that it melted like butter as soon as it touched the warm scones. The service was OK, not particularly friendly- nothing to really complain about, but nothing to rave about either. All a bit of a shame as it had the potential to be really nice, but just felt like the staff couldn't be bothered.
