What You'll Get
The intrepid salmon undertake a Herculean task of returning to their original spawning site as they migrate, often leaping up waterfalls. These brave beasts are a fitting prey on an adventurous beginners’ fishing course. Following an tuition on the basics of equipment and techniques of casting, the day kicks off in earnest with a journey to a productive salmon site on the banks of the River Tay System. A skilled tutor will be on-hand throughout to ensure the correct methods of spey casting are being adhered to, which allows for more productive fishing. With confidence in the sport’s techniques increased, the fishing will continue wherever the best spots are, with transport available throughout the seven-hour day. Salmon flies, photos, and videos of the action will be taken home afterwards as keepsakes.
Groupon Asks Terry Mallin, Head Salmon Fishing Guide at Speyfly, about his best-ever catch.
G: Why should someone try it?
“Imagine standing on the edge of the river; there’s a slight mist rising. The only sound is the flow of the water and the local wildlife. You cast your fly into the river. The line starts to tighten, you lift your rod and your reel starts to scream. Fish on!”
G: What’s your best-ever catch?
“That’s a tough one. It’s got to be the 29lb salmon I caught on the River Girvan in 2012. It’s the largest salmon I’ve landed in Scotland and think it broke the beat record too. We safely released the fish after a few photos.”
G: What are you fishing for at this time of year?
“Early season (January and February) is the start of salmon fishing on most of the rivers throughout Scotland. As we get into March/April/May our season really gets into full swing and continues until the end of October.”
G: What do you enjoy most about what you do?
“There is nothing more satisfying than taking a guest through the basics of salmon fishing and fly casting. You can watch their confidence improve as the day goes on and when they land their first salmon, the smile says it all.”
Speyfly has reeled in over 1,500 likes on Facebook and hooked over 5,100 followers on Twitter. It’s ranked the second best attraction in Cumbernauld on TripAdvisor, with reviewers commendeing the enthusiastic instructors and smooth running of the day.
