From Our Editors

The team at Tameside Canal Boat Trust take pride in the narrowboat they set off on from Portland Basin every day. Its name is Still Waters, and it is mainly manned by volunteers. The boat boasts step-free access and 47 seats, and it can be hired by schools and groups to enjoy the beautiful views of the canal side while gently moving along the canal.

booked trip not knowing what to expect great for kids and museum was interesting and educational. .we had coffee in the cafe it's a nice budget friendly trip..it was a cold September day but wrapped up and overall not a bad day for us it's worth a visit to the small museum to find out about famous people and how canals and mills in the local area catered for people in the days before cars and technology

Surprisingly rural as the canal seems to run by the side of parkland. The boat itself is very quiet and the guys made it interesting not least by telling us how much rubbish they have to remove from the canal. Great cup of tea and piece of cake from the museum shop afterwards and souvenirs from the museum shop.

Excellent value for money! It was interesting to see things from a different perspective! The history of the area, and how things have changed over the years.

Not the most picturesque section of canal, especially as you cruise past an abbatoir! Would absolutely recommend the Portland Basin Museum for a visit, which is where the canal boat journey sets off from.

Filthy canal and water side. No commentary. Boat driver smoking all the time. You could smell it really strongly inside so no consideration that there were children on board. My advice is to stay on land and visit the great museum and lovely cafe.
