From Our Editors

The team at Tameside Canal Boat Trust take pride in the narrowboat they set off on from Portland Basin every day. Its name is Still Waters, and it is mainly manned by volunteers. The boat boasts step-free access and 47 seats, and it can be hired by schools and groups to enjoy the beautiful views of the canal side while gently moving along the canal.

Excellent value for money! It was interesting to see things from a different perspective! The history of the area, and how things have changed over the years.

Not the most picturesque section of canal, especially as you cruise past an abbatoir! Would absolutely recommend the Portland Basin Museum for a visit, which is where the canal boat journey sets off from.

Filthy canal and water side. No commentary. Boat driver smoking all the time. You could smell it really strongly inside so no consideration that there were children on board. My advice is to stay on land and visit the great museum and lovely cafe.

The boat is as dirty , it was 35 minutes it went down a long tunnel came out the other end . There was a few minutes talk about Donkey Stone as there was a factory at the point of turning around and back again . Very disappointing , I only paid £5 for two people , a family of four got on and paid £12 . A total waste of money, no sightseeing whatsoever. LA Stockport

A hidden gem! Accessed via a wonderful free museum, we saw barges being repaired, lived in, the captain knew all about the area, it was a short (around 40min) but lovely boat ride, my two children loved it and there visitors aging from around 4 to 13 on our barge. Definitely worth the money, and it all goes to a very good cause too!
