From Our Editors

Built by Lt. Cmdr. Roy Francis, The Wells & Walsingham Light Railway is the longest 10¼" narrow gauge steam railway in the world. It has two Garratt locomotives riding on it: the Norfolk Hero and Norfolk Heroine. Passengers are invited to take a seat in enclosed, covered and open carriages, which take around 30 minutes to cover the distance from Wells to Walsingham or back. The train passes five bridges and lets visitors see some of the Norfolk countryside, with stops at Warham St Mary and Wighton. While in Walsingham, guests may take their time to visit the town's shops and restaurants. Driving experiences and group rides are also available.

The train trip was a lot of fun and the staff were very friendly. It was lovely to see country side that cannot usually be accessed. However, we were a little disappointed to discover that the station was way out of the main town of Wells, which meant that we had to immediately catch the train back again to Walsingham as there was nothing for us to do for 2 hours which unfortunately spoilt our plan for the day. A mini-bus service into the harbour would have been helpful, I was unable to do the 20min uphill walk and I'm sure many others find themselves in the same situation.

Lovely little trip best done in good weather though!! Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Would recommend starting in Wells and going to Walsingham as doing the trip the other way, the station is quite a way from Wells town centre and you could be pushed for time. Overall a good experience.

Lovely couple of hours spent with the family, enjoying the Norfolk countryside. We weren't there during a special event but they looked fun too..!

Go on one of the earlier trains to make sure you have plenty of time to look around wells and walsingham in between rides.
