From Our Editors

Forest Bushcraft has been reintroducing urbanites to the primitive outdoor skills of their forebears for over 25 years. The Forest of Dean-based company covers key bushcraft skills such as tracking, hunting, fishing, fire-making, foraging, and also leads outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, climbing and cave exploration. It runs day courses, weekend courses, and a nomad course for more advanced skills. Forest Bushcraft’s website also sells outdoor gear such as boots and waterproofs, camping-style cooking equipment, fire-making tools, and hunting knives.

The instructor had lots of knowledge and I felt I had learned some interesting things about bushcraft. He clearly knew what he was talking about. Having said that though, he came across as being bored to be there and even commented that the day was dragging. There were regular references made about it being a Groupon booking and so certain aspects were being left out, including a hot drink so take your own. At times I felt as though he was a bit put out to have to run the day. Dress warm if you are going in the winter as you spend chunks of time listening and therefore can get cold quickly. A breakdown of what the day will entail would be useful at the beginning. A general overview: knife and saw skills, then peg making for a shelter, some discussion about trees and their uses dotted throughout the day; making a pot holder for a fire; shelter making; starting a fire from different methods. I felt what we did could have been condensed into a shorter day. As I said some interesting aspects but a more engaged delivery would have improved the pace and feel of the day.

Would have liked to have have been shown some examples of the types of the types of food you can forage and perhaps tried some and also learnt how to make a completely natural shelter but otherwise it was a great experience.

An itinerary of the day at the start would be helpful. Also let people know they should bring tea bags etc

to get the instructions right by including taking a mug. Don't make us stand around for an hour doing nothing waiting for people that don't turn up then rush through stuff to catch up.
