Although he'd studied French for 10 years, Steve Kaufmann could barely put a sentence together. Frustrated, he decided to develop his own language-learning system. This became LingQ (pronounced "link"), an online tool that helps students learn new tongues organically instead of getting caught up in grammar rules and difficult textbooks. Kaufmann believes one of the best ways to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it, which is why LingQ offers thousands of hours of audio that, with the help of a transcript, students can follow along with. Students can study more than 10 languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese. The site also connects students through its message board, where they can get help from tutors and meet others studying the same language. And LingQ is available as an iOS and Android app, so learners can easily converse with native speakers on the go.
