Launched in 1999, Steam Dreams is the brainchild of steam train enthusiast Marcus Robertson, whose mother wrote the world-acclaimed children's stories, The Wombles. As a child, Marcus loved the magic of steam travel and the excitement it conjured up as the engine, with all its power and glory, passed along the British countryside. In the mid-1990s while taking his own children on steam trips, he realised there were a lot of people like him looking to re-live the nostalgia of steam travel. In 2000 the first Cathedrals Express train left London for Canterbury. Since then, things have gone from strength to strength and Steam Dreams now welcome over 19,000 passengers on board each year on over 50 trips and stop at 100 stations across the UK.
