Established in 1978, Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum sits on the outskirts of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Original external buildings, haulage drifts and underground tunnels still stand today to welcome visitors and teach them some history of ironstone mining. Preserving and archiving a collection of artefacts from the era, the museum aims to ensure the industry is not forgotten about. Guided tours through the Loftus mine, that used to employ over 500 men and boys, are regularly organised, and patrons can also use the on-site genealogy service.
