From Our Editors

Established in 1978, Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum sits on the outskirts of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Original external buildings, haulage drifts and underground tunnels still stand today to welcome visitors and teach them some history of ironstone mining. Preserving and archiving a collection of artefacts from the era, the museum aims to ensure the industry is not forgotten about. Guided tours through the Loftus mine, that used to employ over 500 men and boys, are regularly organised, and patrons can also use the on-site genealogy service.

Annoying for it to be advertised as a reduction fro £12 to £3 for 2 when actually the entrance at the moment is only £2 per person - so the reduction is "only" £4 to £3. AND they don't want to give Groupon visitors" the ticket to permit annual viewing which you would get for £1 extra! So - be aware that, for some as yet unknown time, the "Mine Entrance" part of the tour isn't operating (hence the standard entry price reduction) The reduced tour consists of a visit around the museum rooms led by a guide. We were lucky that ours had actually worked in one of the mines - so the "standard spiel" was leavened by some good actual experience! We enjoyed this part of the tour. Whether the "younger" guides would be as good we don't know.

As far as the process with Groupon excellent but as yet we have not manage to use our tickets for this venue . I booked a time & date but there was no where to park dreadful so we never went it. But on a positive point on contacting them about not being able to access this, they have actually agreed to honour the ticket should we want to try again.

The guide we had was great. He spent almost 2 hours with the two of us telling us all about the industry and the hardships that the miners suffered You can understand how the Labour party came into existence when you hear about the exploitation of the miners.

Because there had been a roof fall we could not have a tour of the mines and these will not be ready to be seen untill 2019 when the new museum will open. The little tour we had was interesting to us but was not what we expected.
