From Our Editors

Situated in the heart of Liverpool, Adelphi Hotel is an Edwardian-style building complete with chandeliers and marble halls. Dating back to 1914, the hotel combines vintage interiors with a contemporary gym and spa. It also has plenty to offer in the way of dining, with fine cuisine in the restaurant and more informal foodstuffs in the carvery and three bars.

Although in modern times this legendary property comes under the shabby chic/faded grandeur category, it is still an epic place to stay, with marble features and wood panelling inside and outside rooms on the historic original first four floors. The Grand Lounge remains one of the most spectacular public spaces in the UK. Incredible!

Went for afternoon tea. Absolutely dreadful. Shown to a small occasional table in need of a thorough clean and chipped. At first we thought it was a table waiting to be cleared but soon realised that was ours. Presentation 0/10. Moves to another table which was just as bad with a "soft" seat through which you could feel all the springs. Pot of tea came before food so was cool when food arrived. Sandwiches ok but thinly filled. Scones small and rock hard with thinnest scrape of jam. Other cakes mostly unidentifiable and either Uber-sweet or tasteless. When hot pot of tea was requested it was plonked down with a "There's your tea." To finish off, the cake plates were scraped off onto our little plates whilst we were still at the table. The poster proudly advertising a traditional afternoon tea at the front of the hotel bore absolutely no resemblance to what we were served. This was a treat for my friends and was an embarrassing experience and great disappointment. Nil value for money. The place was empty. I'm not surprised. A disgrace.
